Dear Burry’s Church,

I wish I could take credit for this month’s newsletter article, but Stacie presented a great idea.  She said, “In October, we are taking pictures for the new directory.  Write about the old directories.”  Then she handed me a stack of nine directories spanning from 1968 to 2020.  Over the last few days, I have been flipping through them.  Two things stand out: first, many of you have been here a long time; second, your sense of style sure has changed.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, or at least that’s how the saying goes, and perusing through decades of old photos has me wondering, what stories would we share about the people that have made up and continue to make up Burry’s?  In the 1968 directory, Reverend Stewart wrote, “This church, as is true of all, is made up of people – average, common, ordinary people.”  And I would add, “And God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.”  

Remember, there’s a spiritual directory filled with men and women, bound together by the promise and fullfilment of Christ, that God has raised up and prepared for good works over the last several thousand years.  Hebrews 12:1-2 states, “Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
